Abstract: '...My interpretation of Abraham is therefore definitely not definitive. It does represent an attempt to rescue Abraham as a "living presence" for believer and sceptic alike. It is a sort of modern "midrash", a psychological, anthropologically informed commentary on the man revealed by the Biblical Narrative: one "reading" of his history. Although I am trained in analytic psychology, I have not attempted to psychoanalyze Abraham...since the relevant information about his early life is unknown....Instead I use life cycle psychology, cultural anthropology and such to understand Abraham's life course and his spiritual odyssey in terms which make contemporary sense....'
