Abstract: 'It initially needed intensive studies in alchemy for me to realize that the process of working out the meaning of a picture is basically a process of "Distilling out gold", "the gold of the sages" as the old masters of alchemy used to call it, namely consciousness. In the same way as in the work of the alchemist, "gold" or conscious understanding of a picture cannot be obtained without broad experience, disciplined method and great dedication with regard to the mystery enshrined in the object of study. The method proposed here grew and developed thanks to the dialogue with students in my lectures, seminars and especially control-case colloquia. It is born out of practice and meant as an aid for practice.'
