Abstract: '...what shall we make of the phrase "Comedy of Dante Alighieri"? Does it indicate Dante merely as the author, or does it designate him as the subject, the protagonist of the poem? It might mean either, with regard to language or to fact; and it probably means both; for Dante surely wrote the Comedy, and wrote it about himself. And the work is a "comedy," as the aforesaid letter states, because it begins in disaster and ends in happiness....' --Introduction
