'...these [Eastern] images, surfacing in the psyches of westerners on a frequent and continual basis, deal with essential mysteries of psychic development that range from the primal to the transpersonal. We must not and cannot ignore these images; rather, we have an obligation to attempt to understand them and relate them to our own experience of the psyche. My initial project, a series of lectures on this subject, had this in mind. It was an extended commentaryk on Jung's seminars on Kundalini, along with a comparison both to the alchemical process and to individuation as it is experienced in analysis and in the course of life....What ensued was a journey in which the unconscious produced images similar to those of alchemy and Kundalini, plunging me into the depths of a territory in my psyche in a manner that I had not experienced before. This enabled me to confront aspects of my own history, personality and fate in a new way. This paper is the first episode of that story....My additional hope is that this portrayal of my own inner experience can provide some insight into the nature of the role of the body in the individuation process.' --p. 2.
