'The first three articles were originally published under the title Psyche and Bible by Spring Publications, Zurich, 1974. They have been lightly edited for this volume by H.Y. Kluger and Inner City Books.'

'The Idea of the Chosen People: A Contribution to the Symbolism of Individuation' was offered first as a seminar in the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Summer Semester 1953. The material was presented again at the Psychological Club of Zurich in February 1955, and subsequently to the Analytical Psychology Club of Los Angeles. The translation was made by Murray Stein and then revised into the present version by the author.. 'King Saul and the spirit of God' was a lecture given in German to the Psychological Club in Zurich in July 1944, and in English to the Analytical Psychology Club of London, appearing in print as Guild of Pastoral Psychology, Pamphlet No. 47 (1947). It was reprinted in Spring 1948, from which this version has been taken. In 1948 the lecture also appeared in German, 'Saul und der Geist Gottes: ein Beitrag zum Problem der Melancholie', in Studien zur analytischen PsychologieC.G. Jungs: Festschrift zum 80. Geburtstag von C.G. Jung, Zurich: Rascher, 1955. It was translated by the author with the collaboration of Barbara Hannah.. 'The Queen of Sheba in Bible and legends' was presented first as a lecture in honor of C.G. Jung's eightieth birthday in July 1955. It was later enlarged and given at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, in Los Angeles at the Analytical Psychological Club (1967), at the C.G. Jung Foundation in New York (1967), and in Basel and San Francisco. It was translated by the author with the collaboration of H.Y. Kluger.. 'Old Testament roots of woman's spiritual problem' was originally published in Journal of Analytical Psychology, vol. 23, no. 2 (April 1978).. 'The Jewish myth' was first published in A Well of Living Waters: a Festschnrift for Hilde Kirsch, C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles, 1977.
