'This paper originally appeared under the title, "Schatten, Animus und Anima:, in the Wiener Zeitschrift fur Nervenheilkunde und deren Grenzgebiete, Band I: Heft 4, 1948. It has not been published before in English. This translation is published with the permission of the Springer Verlag, Vienna.'. Translated by William H. Kennedy.
'The fact that these three concepts, which are fundamental to my psychology, have met with misunderstanding of many kinds is not surprising to me. They are not easily understandable--particularly in the absence of specific psychotherapeutic experience--and for that reason they make considerable demands on the open-mindedness of my public. Therefore, it seems to me not superfluous to return to them here.'
