Abstract: '...For forty years I have read every book I could find which dealt with the critical examination of the Hebrew Scriptures. I soon formed ideas of the dependence of the Jewish Scriptures on the religions practised by the nations surrounding them. I tried to gain a clear idea of what the ancient peoples actually did, and how they worshipped, apart from the injunctions and theories of their prophets....'
