1 Myth, Gnosis and modernity. 2 Carl Gustav Jung and Wotan's return. 3 Mircea Eliade and nostalgia for the sacred. 4 Joseph Campbell and the new quest for the Holy Grail. 5. Conclusion: the myth of myth
'Professor of Religion and one-time student of Mircea Eliade, Ellwood examines the lives of and works on mythology by Jung, Eliade and Campbell, and their attempts to connect modern man with ancient roots in order to balance out the loss of spirituality in a Late Modern Age society. He concludes that their approaches to myth are all inherently politically conservative because of their emphasis on the individual, and that much of the personal and political criticism levelled at them must be viewed in this context.'
