Abstract: 'The contents of this book derive in large part from a fonference on self pscology held in Chicago in October, 1978. This was a particularly significant time in the history of self psychology. Although the studies of the disorders of narcissism and the origins of the psychology of the self are clearly the work of Heinz Kohut, during recent years others have written, discussed, argued, and worried over the issues raised by Kohut, to the point that an international meeting was called in order to facilitate ongoing dialogues in the field. More importantly, concern had arisen in 1978 that Kohut's work embodied "dissent" from traditional psychoanalysis....' --Introductory remarks
