Concerning the word "geist". Self-representation of the spirit in dreams. Animal symbolism of the spirit in fairy tales
Abstract: 'Spirit is characterized first of all by the principle of spontaneous movement and activity, secondly by the property of free creation of images outside of sense perception, thirdly by the autonomous and absolute manipulation of these images. To the primitive, spirit is something "over against"; but with increasing development it enters the realm of human consciousness and becomes a function subordinated to consciousness and so apparently loses its original character of autonomy.'
