Abstract: '...has opened up three new lines of investigation into relatively neglected areas. The first line of exploration is an inquiry into the phenomenology of shame and guilt, and the relationship between these two undischarged feeling-states and neurotic symptoms. The second line of exploration is into the relationship between perceptual style and proneness to shame or guilt. The third direction of study leads the reader to consider the implications for therapeutic technique resulting from a focus on the experiential aspects of shame and guilt.'
