'The primary impetus for this book was my wish to explore how looking at shame in a variety of clinical contexts might provide an opportunity for a critique of some of the current theories of shame. I was particularly interested in bringing to this exploration the idea, shared by many, that while painful emotions such as shame are crucial to early personality structuralization, psychotherapists must look not only at those early instances of shame but also at the role painful emotions play in the ongoing functioning of the adult personality.' --Acknowledgements
